Prenatal Massage

Growing a tiny human is a wild ride. Your body? Constantly changing, maybe in ways you never expected. Your emotions? ALL over the place. Your heart is expanding to feel a brand new kind of love, or getting ready to be cracked wide open again in the very very best way. There’s things (so many things) to buy, things to prep, things to research…

I can’t think of anyone that deserves a massage more than you, mama.

When you come in for your prenatal session, rest assured that we’ll not only ease your aches and pains, but quiet your mind too. Mamas are quite literally carrying the weight of the world (someone’s tiny world!) around, all the time. Let my table be a place where you can set it down for awhile. Come back to your body and the magic of this moment.

This is a beautiful journey- but there’s no denying that it’s hard work, too! Prenatal massage is a safe and effective way to ease the aches and pains that come with pregnancy. Whether it’s low back and hip pain, sore neck and shoulders, or that third trimester whole body exhaustion, some time on the table will help you feel better and enjoy this special time.

Massage can help to ease these common issues associated with pregnancy:

  • Low back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Neck and upper back pain
  • Headaches
  • Sore and swollen feet
  • Wrist pain
  • Rib soreness
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Trouble sleeping

Prenatal massage is also a lovely way to slow down and connect with your body and baby. Honor the big, constant changes you’re going through (both of you!) and enjoy being present in this moment. Bonus- all those relaxing, happy chemicals flowing through you after a massage? Baby gets those too!

Prenatal Massage FAQs

  • Is it safe to receive massage in the first trimester?
    • Absolutely! The majority of people can be massaged safely through their entire pregnancy. If you have a unique situation that would make bodywork unsafe at anytime, we’ll determine that during intake before your first session and figure out how to safely proceed.
  • Can pregnant people get their feet and ankles massaged?
    • Sure can! This is a common misconception due to the location of acupuncture points that can stimulate the uterus, but trust me- if massage therapists could induce labor that easily, we’d all have a line around the block. When those points do have the intended effect, a practitioner has been applying pressure in a very specific spot for an extended amount of time. Lightly passing over these spots during a foot massage is not risky at all, so enjoy!
  • Can I lay face down for my massage?
    • For your first trimester and possibly some of your second, yes. I switch to sidelying positioning once your belly has grown big enough that lying face down is no longer comfortable- the exact timing varies from person to person. No cutout table here- many experts in prenatal massage actually caution against these, as they tend to provide inadequate support for the belly and may strain the uterine ligaments.
  • How often should I come in?
    • I recommend that pregnant clients come in for massage at the same frequency as your OB or midwife appointments- so about once a month in the beginning, increasing in frequency tio biweekly and weekly sessions once your due date gets closer. Not only does this allow us to stay on top of any chronic aches and pains you may have, but it gives you a regular time to check out of the daily hustle and tune in to your body and baby.
